Spartan Stores, based in Grand Rapids, Michigan, owns and operates 96 supermarkets in Michigan. The company also supplies more than 40,000 private and national brand products to nearly 375 independent grocery locations, and grosses over $2.5B in annual revenue.
In 2010, responding to an increasing desire for a more digitally-enabled shopping experience, Spartan began the process of making more services available online for its banner store customers. While Spartan had initially planned to use Drupal for content management and Magento for online commerce, the integration proved troublesome. Myplanet was hired to migrate the project from a Drupal-Magento hybrid to one based entirely on Drupal and Drupal Commerce.
In addition to significant user experience work, Myplanet created a robust platform that allows Spartan to offer a multitude of services and products online.
Integrating individualized weekly flyers across Spartan’s 96 supermarkets, customers are able to select the store closest to them, browse the weekly flyer online, and creating a printable shopping list with attached coupons for items they would like to purchase.

A variety of items are available online for purchase, including gift certificates, in-store classes, and seasonal wine sales, all of which required complex business rules to enable. Integration with a third-party payment provider is handled seamlessly in a PCI-compliant manner.
